Allen worked quickly on the teleporter, but he had difficulty. He had three dials to adjust correctly, and he had not had much time to study the machine before. He put them in what he thought was the correct position, but when he concentrated, nothing happened. What was wrong? He turned the dials to slightly different positions and tried again. Still no result. He tried again and again. Had he missed something? He turned the machine on its side and checked the bottom for another switch or dial.

“Hurry, Allen,” shouted Kit. “They’re rushing me.” The Plaxians had suddenly thrown open the door, and two of them rushed out, followed by Paask, who had a gun. He was taking no chances on getting shot himself, but he also had little opportunity to use his own gun. Kit pushed the buttons on the back of her pistol, but nothing happened.

“Hurry!” she called again.

Allen found something like a small button on the bottom of the teleporter. This had to be it! He pushed it and was rewarded by a faint hum. Two Plaxians poked their squirmy heads through the door. Kit had tackled Paask before he could use his gun and was trying to pin him to the floor. Allen had to do something about the nearer Plaxians first.

He clutched the teleporter and visualized them moving to the kitchen. They vanished, but he heard a crashing noise in the kitchen, followed by violent squawking. What happened? Had he made them bump into something?

He turned to help Kit. She was still fighting with Paask, who was about to get his gun hand free. Allen ran over and forced Paask’s arm back. Paask was strong, but no match for the two of them. Allen banged the gun hand against the floor, and Paask’s fingers loosened. The gun fell free, and Allen grabbed it. He stood up, aiming the gun at Paask, and backed toward the teleporter. As soon as he got there he visualized Paask in the closet across the hall. Paask vanished. He then visualized the other two Plaxians moving from the kitchen to the closet. The squawking noise shifted from the kitchen to the closet and became even louder. Maybe they had banged heads with Paask.

Now to get help. It was late at night, but Allen suspected his father would still be in his lab office. The plant was open day and night, and his father often worked late. But he would stay even later, now that Allen and Kit were missing. He would have to do something.

“Kit,” he said. “We can’t leave these Plaxians alone or they’ll escape. I’m going to send you to my dad’s office while I stand guard. Ask him to get two security guards and then stand in the room at the spot where you appeared. I’ll try to bring you all back here. I’ll give you say about ten minutes.

“OK,” said Kit. “I’ll sure be glad to get out of here.” Allen pictured Kit standing in his father’s office, and she disappeared.
